Family Programs at HAHS

Drop-in during Museum hours on the third Saturday for guided crafts and fun for kids of all ages. See below for our schedule of activities in our cozy classroom. No reservations are required and crafts are free. See our local history and art exhibitions, experience guided and free-play art activities, and explore our toy and book nook.

May 16: AAPI and the Art of Hisako Hibi | Learn about Hayward Area Japanese American painter Hisako Hibi and her paintings and other art. Storytime starts at 11:00 AM as we read Amy Lee-Tai’s A Place Where the Sunflowers Grow and Eyes that Kiss in the Corners by Joanne Ho. Create your own art pieces inspired by the things around us, and stay for a watercolor painting class with local artist Ruey Syrop at 12:30 PM (space is limited; registration recommended).

June 20: Pride | June is Pride Month, so come by the museum to see Positively Prideful in the HAHS Art Gallery! Join us for an 11:00 AM storytime where we will be reading And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson & Peter Parnell, Pride Colors by Robin Stevenson, and Kaitlyn Considine’s Emma and Meesha My Boy: A Two Mom Story. Stay to learn about the Pride flag's history and make rainbow friendship pins to take home.

July 18: Nurseries and Greenhouses | As the weather changes to sunny and warm, we get to take advantage of all the beauty nature has to offer. Celebrate summer by learning about the history of flower horticulture in our area. Storytime is at 11:00 AM, and we will be reading The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle, Planting A Rainbow by Lois Ehlert, and Lola Plants A Garden by Anna McQuinn. Stay to make your very own flower suncatcher to take home.

August 15: Hayward Shoreline and Salt | The shoreline has always played a big role in the history of the Hayward area, so this month we want to talk more about it! Storytime begins at 11:00 AM, where we will read Leo Can Swim and The Sandcastle That Lola Built by Anna McQuinn.  Then learn about the importance of salt and how it shaped the area’s development. You will get to make a unique salt crystal sculpture to take with you.
