Current Projects

Museum Collection Inventory:

An inventory of the collection in the museum was started in 2005. The project began in the upstairs storage area with intern Carrie Santell. Carrie methodically went through object by object, drawer by drawer recording descriptions, measurements, and conditions. Pictures were then taken of each object and attached to the documentation. By the time her internship had ended Carrie managed to complete about a quarter of the drawers in the upstairs area. Since then volunteers Amy Kidwell and Charlene have taken over where she left off. Amy is working with the dolls and toys and Charlene is working with the personal artifacts. Once the inventory is completed, the research phase will begin. In this phase, we will attempt to identify each object for its age, maker and use.  More

McConaghy House Inventory:

An inventory of the McConaghy House collection was started this past summer. The project began in the formal parlor and is working its way around the first floor. With the help of summer intern Caroline Ogasawara, from John F. Kennedy University's museum studies program, both parlors and the library have been completed. After completion of the inventory each object will be researched for era, maker and history. More

Meek Estate Restoration:

The Meek Estate is an 1869 Victorian Italianate house. It has been closed to the public for many years. Last year the Hayward Area Historical Society signed a lease with the Hayward Area Park and Recreation District to restore and manage the house. In Fall 2005 the Historical Society signed on with the architectural firm of Page and Turnbull to begin the restoration process. In the past year structural reports have been completed to determine what work needs to be done to the shell of the house prior to interior restoration beginning. In the coming year, 2007, it is the hope of the Historical Society that work will be completed on the shell of the house and that restoration of ceilings, walls and floors may begin. Be sure to check back for future updates and photos of the work in progress. More

Object Re-Housing:

In January 2005 HAHS undertook a reorganization and re-housing project with its collection and storage areas. The goal is to re-house objects in a manner consistent with current professional museum standards. Previous boxes and storage materials have been replaced with archival quality products in an effort to preserve the three dimensional collection for many years to come. In Spring 2006 the old shelving units, metal shelves with wood frames, were torn out and new all metal units were installed. The new shelving is taller and has segmented shelves to maximize space. In addition, it is anchored to the floor and braced across the top to make it more earthquake sound. HAHS is happy to announce that the large storage area has been completed.
