It's Your Birthday!

December 6, 2006 marks the 50th birthday of the founding of the Hayward Area Historical Society. To commemorate this milestone, we are taking a look at how birthdays are celebrated in our community. We found that as diverse as the Hayward area is, we all treat birthdays as a special event. It is a time for families to gather together to celebrate and honor each other. Birthday traditions vary depending on where your family comes from, where you live, what language you speak, or even how much money you have. However, all birthday celebrations have three things in common: the party, the gifts, and those particularly special "milestone" birthdays. Through photographs, artifacts, and documents lent by members of the Hayward area community and culled from the HAHS collections, It's Your Birthday explores those common birthday traditions while educating the visitor about different ones.
