11th Annual History Awards

Please join us as we celebrate! Each year, the Hayward Area Historical Society recognizes individuals and groups that have made a significant contribution towards maintaining the community's history and historic character at its annual History Awards.
Congratulations to this year's awardees:
- The Varni Family, recipient of the Historic Preservation Award for their efforts to maintain the historic integrity of the building at 650 A Street, originally the Pioneer Skate Arena, while adapting it for reuse as a place of business.
- Fred's Flowers and Gifts, recipient of the Historic Business Award, as a family owned and operated business for over 50 years.
- The Lone Tree Cemetery, recipient of the Historic Organization Award, for its longevity in Hayward and important contributions in preserving our community's history.
- Kimberlyn Fischer-Hayes, recipient of the Educator of the Year award for her involvement in, and critical engagement with, the educational programs and services at HAHS.
- Karen Holzmeister, recipient of the Community Service Award for her outstanding dedication and service over the years as a reporter and her efforts to support the preservation of our community's history.
- Maria Ochoa, recipient of the John Sandoval Award for her outstanding contribution to preserving and promoting Hayward's history through her work to uncover Russell City's history and publish the Images of America Russell City book.
