Hayward Area Historical Society Museum
Downtown Museum on Main Street, Hayward

Location:

The museum bulding is located on the corner of Main and 'C' Street, 22701 Main Street in Hayward

Hours:

Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11:00am to 4:00pm.
The museum is closed on New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.

Admission:

Always Free.

What you will find at the Downtown Museum:

  • Local history exhibit that traces our community's history back thousands of years to the first residents of the East Bay--the Ohlone. Did you know that this area was once part of Mission San Jose? Do you know who Hayward is named after? Find out in this permanent exhibit.
  • History Library and Archives where you can research topics in local history using government records, newspapers, photographs, books, and business records.
  • The Corner Store filled with gifts, books, and Hayward area memorabilia.
  • Temporary Exhibits that change every few months.

From 880 N: Take the Jackson Street/Route 92 exit towards Downtown Hayward. Turn left on Mission Boulevard. After 2 blocks, turn right onto C Street. After one block, turn right on Main Street. Turn right into the first driveway - our parking lot.

From 880 S: Take the A Street exit towards Downtown Hayward. Turn left on A Street. Turn right on Main Street. Just past C Street turn right into the first driveway - our parking lot.

From 580 E: Take the Route 238 Hayward exit which becomes Foothill Blvd. Turn right on B Street. Turn left on Main Street. Just past C Street turn right into the first driveway - our parking lot.

From 580 W: Take the Strobridge Avenue exit, and turn right on Strobridge Avenue. Turn left at the light (Castro Valley Blvd). After crossing under the freeway ramps, turn left on Foothill Blvd. Turn right on B Street. Turn left on Main Street, and just past C Street, turn right into the first driveway - our parking lot.

Public Transportation

The Hayward BART Station is just three blocks from us. Upon exiting the station, walk East on B Street for two blocks (through the Bus terminals and past city hall). Turn right on Main Street. The museum is one block south, at the corner of Main and C Streets. Many AC Transit lines service downtown Hayward including (but not limted to) #s 77, 80, 95, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 91, 92, 93, 94, 99, 386, 801. Call (510) 817-1717 to speak with an AC Transit official about route information including time points, destinations, or trip planning.
