Hayward Area Film Festival Showcase

The Hayward Area Film Festival is dedicated to exhibiting short films and videos produced by student filmmakers. This event will honor outstanding Animation, Narrative, Documentary, Public Service Announcement (P.S.A.), Experimental, and special Film Challenge projects created by students. It is the goal of the Hayward Area Film Festival to continue to encourage student creativity, give students the opportunity to tell their stories, and further introduce them to the world of filmmaking. A short awards ceremony will follow the film showcase to acknowledge the winners of each category. This program is a partnership with the Bay Area Digital Arts (BADA) program at San Lorenzo High School and the Community Multi Media Academy (CMMA) program at Tennyson High School.

Holiday Festival at McConaghy House

Discover the history of the McConaghy House this Holiday Season! Be part of a community tradition and explore the local landmark as it has been adorned in cheer and ornaments for the season. The first Holiday tour was held back in 1976 (the same year it was open to the public) and has taken place nearly every year since, making it a tradition you can enjoy with your whole family for years to come.

The House will be open on the first three Saturdays of December from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM for self-guided tours. Experience McConaghy House decked out for the holidays and learn some family history. Don't forget to say hi to Santa Claus, tell him what you want for Christmas, and get your photo taken with him as well!

There will be additional activities outdoors for the whole family. Bring the little ones down to make their own tree ornaments and holiday crafts. Be sure to take a look through the Carriage House Gift Shop where you can find an amazing assortment of holiday items and gifts. Complementary hot cider and snacks will be offered, and admission into the Shop is free.

House admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors, and free for HAHS Members and children ages 4 and younger.

Ancient Roots & Folk Traditions of Mexico's Feast of Days of the Dead

Join the Historical Society for our Annual Day of the Dead Program lead by educator, curator, and Día de los Muertos specialist Bea Carrillo Hocker. Hocker’s presentation will address the Pre-Hispanic concept of death as portrayed in the paintings and sculptures of Mexico’s early artists, the impact of Spanish Catholicism on indigenous funerary rites, and offer insights into the present-day pageantry of Día de los Muertos along with the reclamation of these traditions by Mexican Americans.

Following this discussion will be a Mexican Day of the Dead Skeleton Jumping Jack Workshop. Skeleton Jumping Jacks are the traditional toys sold during the Day of the Dead Festival. Come create this traditional toy – accessorize it to give it its own unique personality.

Summer Days at Meek Mansion and Park

Spend the day in the park with the family! There will be family history tours of the Mansion in the afternoon and a free viewing of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) in the evening under the stars. In the spirit of the film, come dressed as your favorite Star Wars character. Movie starts at 8:30 PM. This event is produced in partnership with the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (HARD).

Independence Day Celebration at Meek Mansion

This year’s totally free and fun filled Independence Day Celebration at Meek Park will be held on Sunday, July 2 from 11am to 3pm.  The well-known community symbol and residence of the Meek Family will be open to the public for walk-through tours.  Grab some lunch at the local food vendor booths, pull out those picnic blankets, and enjoy the sounds of Johnny Mahalo and the Wild Coconuts.  There will be outdoor games, patriotic crafts, face painting, community groups, and festivities for the whole family.  Join the Hayward Area Historical Society in celebrating this wonderful occasion!

CA-15 Congressional Art Competition Exhibition and Award Ceremony

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol. To participate, artwork must be submitted to Congressman Swalwell’s District Office (3615 Castro Valley Blvd in Castro Valley) no later than 5:00 PM on Friday, April 28, 2017.
