Conditions at the Meek Estate as of 2006
December 2006: The upgrading of the heating, electrical and plumbing systems is finally completed. In February 2006 the Hayward Area Parks and Recreation District (HARD) turned the keys to the Meek Estate over to the Hayward Area Historical Society (HAHS).
- In fall of 2005, HAHS began searching for professional assistance in restoring the house. In October 2005 the San Francisco architectural firm of Page and Turnbull was enlisted to help with the restoration. Page and Turnbull are well-known in the historic preservation field; most recently having completed the Stanford Mansion in Sacramento. HAHS staff met with representatives from the firm and developed a plan of action for restoring the Meek Estate.
The first step of the restoration was to complete a series of surveys that would determine the condition of the building's structure. Throughout 2006 the following surveys were completed on the Meek Estate structure: general structure, foundation, seismic, roof and windows. From the results of these surveys it was determined that some work needs to be done to secure the structure prior to the interior restoration work beginning. The survey of the foundation showed that mortar disintegration has caused a crack through the foundation and needs to be repaired.
The roof and gutters survey determined that a new roof is necessary and that some restoration needs to be done on the gutters. The windows are in need of various repairs including fixing leaking frames and re-alignment. Consequently, HAHS must address several structural issues in the next year before work may be started on the interior.
